Time To Go Wassailing!

The time of year is coming for a tradition of old, known as Wassailing! The word Wassail means ‘waes hael’, or ‘good health’. Wassailing took place in Scotland and other countries throughout the 12 days of Christmas, and to ring in the new year. A large, steaming bowl or pot of the hot drink was ceremoniously presented to guests. While modern Wassail recipes have transformed over the years, original ingredients consisted of things like mulled ale, curdled cream, roasted apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and sugar. When presented, it was accompanied by the singing of a traditional song, or carol! This evolved into traveling around the neighborhood, singing carols at the homes of friends and neighbors. Here is a link to a traditional wassailing song! This year might be just the year for your family to start a new tradition like Wassailing!
